Andrea Idili
THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR
Andrea Associate Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Science and Technologies, University of Rome Tor Vergata, where he leads the Translational Chemistry Lab. His research interests lie in the fields of DNA-based electrochemical sensors, continuous real-time molecular monitoring in vivo, functional DNA nanotechnology and point-of-care diagnostics. During his PhD in Chemistry, earned in 2016 at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, he spent almost two years abroad over three different visiting periods at the Université de Montréal (UdeM, Canada) in the group of Alexis Vallée-Bélisle. He then spent two years as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB, USA) in Kevin Plaxco’s group (2017–2019) and two years at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2, Spain) in the group of Arben Merkoçi (2019–2021). Andrea Idili has been awarded a PROBIST Postdoctoral Fellowship (H2020 MSCA-COFUND, 2019), a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (2020) and, as Principal Investigator, a “My First AIRC Grant” from the Italian Association for Cancer Research (2024). He is also the recipient of the 2019 ISSNAF Award for Young Investigators and of the 2013 Canada–Italy Innovation Award issued by the Embassy of Canada to Italy.

Elisa Paialunga
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
Hi, I’m Elisa! I am a Postdoctoral Researcher working within an AIRC-funded project. My research focuses on developing DNA-based biosensors for rapid and continuous molecular monitoring. In particular, I work on the development and characterization of DNA-based scaffolds for detecting monoclonal antibodies and anti-drug antibodies (ADAs). My research also explores electrochemical biosensing approaches for continuous molecular monitoring, with the goal of developing new tools for biomedical applications, from point-of-care testing to in vivo biosensing. Outside the lab, I love traveling, going to concerts and the theatre, and taking long walks with my dogs.

Myriam Alfonsini
POSTGRADUATE RESEARCHER
Hi, my name is Myriam Alfonsini, and I am currently working as a Postgraduate Research Fellow. My research is carried out within an AIRC-funded project, in which I focus on developing DNA-based molecular sensors for clinically relevant targets. My work combines rational DNA design, aptamer engineering, and electrochemical and biophysical sensing approaches to create programmable and reagentless biosensing platforms for biomedical applications, including the detection of microRNAs, small molecules, and therapeutic antibodies. Outside the lab, I enjoy reading books, going out with friends, and spending time with my cats.

Andrea Pappafava
POSTGRADUATE RESEARCHER
My name is Andrea Pappafava, and I am a Postgraduate Researcher in the group of Prof. Andrea Idili at the Department of Chemical Science and Technologies, University of Rome Tor Vergata. My research lies in the field of electrochemistry, with a particular focus on aptamer-based sensing and the characterization of molecular interactions. I work on the re engineering of ssDNA aptamer probes to optimize their performance in electrochemical sensors, and I investigate aptamer ligand binding using voltammetric techniques and Microscale Thermophoresis (MST). My work aims at developing sensing platforms for continuous monitoring and point-of-care use.
